For a site like this, it is only appropriate that the first item rated is named "Genesis." Genesis, of course, is the first book of the Bible and covers the first things; from creation, through the Noah and the flood, to Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, and ends with the story of Joseph. Here we consider the 2005 Genesis Merlot from Hogue Cellars.
Hogue Cellars of Washington state have four different varieties under the Genesis label, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling and Syrah. The Genesis name has not direct biblical connection. The label claims that the line is named for the Hogue family's first vineyard. Of course, it is deeply ingrained within our culture to connect beginnings with Genesis - which makes this the right wine to start our reviews.
This spicy Merlot was not what one expects from a variety that is not known for its boldness. The wine presents a dark, black raspberry red to the eye and a spicy scent reminiscent of pepper and cloves to the noes. The flavor delivers on the aroma's promise. This is no flabby Merlot. There is definitely a taste of pepper, cloves, smoke. The spice is balanced with good fruit flavors reminiscent of pomegranate and ripe berries.
A slightly acidic feel in the mouth was disappointing, as were the more than expected tannins. This wine should improve with more time, perhaps mellowing to closer to what one would expect of a Merlot. While the bold flavor was a welcome surprise, but the spice lingers through the finish. Again, this may mellow with more time.
Unlike so many Merlots, this wine can stand up to bold flavors - I would venture to include in that grilled meats and perhaps even spicier foods. Such dishes should highlight the delightful fruit flavors in this tasty surprise of a wine.
